Joseph A. Levenda, age 89 of Valparaiso passed away November 13, 2012. He was a WWII Us Army veteran, a retired employee of Gainer Bank and a member of St. Patrick’s Church in Chesterton. Joe spent many years in service to the Gary Diocese. He was preceded in death by parents Peter and Susan Levenda and siblings Ella Martin, Victor, John Edward and Leonard Levenda. He is survived by his loving wife of 65 years Rita (nee Wardell) Levenda of Valparaiso; daughter Marsha (John) Durbin of Lake Station; 4 grandchildren Joshua (Heather) Lineberry of Anderson, IN, Nathaniel Lineberry and Christopher (Billie Jean) of Remington, IN, and Johannah Lineberry of Valparaiso; great-grandchildren Janna, Holly, Corrie “Little Joe”, Emily, Abigail, and Allyson and numerous nieces and nephews. Friends may visit with Joe’s family on Friday, November 16, 2012 from 2 to 8 p.m. at Burns Funeral Home, 701 E. 7^th St., Hobart, IN. Funeral Service will be Saturday at 11 a.m. directly at St. Patrick Church, 638 N. Calumet Road, Chesterton, IN. Services will terminate at the church with cremation following. Neita Arlene Quanstrom of Crown Point, IN, April 14, 1917 – November 14, 2012

Neita Arlene Quanstrom was born in Johnston City, Illinois in 1917. She is survived by her husband of 71 years, Walter Roy, children Walter (Fay) Quanstrom, Ronald (Julie) Quanstrom and Joyce (Lee) Abbott, twenty grandchildren and twenty-one great grandchildren.

Neita was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She was involved in many ministries in her lifetime among them Sunday school teacher, choir member, nursing home and hospital volunteer and various women’s ministries. Her participation for fourteen years in the Easter cantata “the Victor” was a highlight.

Neita was truly the Christian example of a Proverbs 31 woman: “her children arise and call her blessed; her husband also and he praises her.”

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, Nov. 17, 2012 at 10:00 a.m. at Burns Funeral Home, 10101 Broadway, Crown Point, IN. Interment at Calumet Park Cemetery in Merrillville, IN. Visitation will be at Burns Funeral Home Friday from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

Ruth H. Altomere of Merrillville, Indiana, February 6, 1955 – November 7, 2012

Ruth H. Altomere (nee Ackermann), age 57, of Merrillville, IN, passed away on Weds, Nov. 7, 2012. Ruth was a graduate of Merrillville High School, Class of 1974. She was a former employee of Southlake Methodist Hospital and R-Place Restaurant in Merrillville, IN. She was preceded in death by her parents, Juergen & Hilde Ackermann. She is survived by children, John Puza, Jr., Stephanie (Jason) Ezell and David Altomere; brothers, Claus (Karen) Ackermann, Michael (Lisa) Ackermann, and Mark Ackermann; sister, Sonya Peters; grandchild, Joshua; several nieces & nephews and many loving friends and co-workers.

Sophie Sprusansky, age 97, formerly of Crown Point and Gary, passed away on Monday, November 12, 2012. Sophie was preceded in death by her husband, Edward Sprusansky, 2 daughters, Sonia Ottoson and Sandra Sprusansky, sister, Tee Bobeck, brother, Kayo Wroblewski, and mother, Sofia Wroblewski.

She is survived by her daughter, Sharon (Fred) Wukich of Crown Point; grandson, Mike Wukich of IN; granddaughter, Debbie (Michael) Lieske of Westfield, IN; great-grandchildren, McKenna & Andrew; and sister, Wanda (Stanley) Bernat of Portage, and many loving nieces and nephews.

Funeral service will be held on Friday, November 16, 2012 at 9:15 a.m. at Burns Funeral Home, 10101 Broadway, Crown Point, IN, going to St. Mary Catholic Church, 321 Joliet Street, Crown Point, IN for a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 a.m. Rev. Anthony J. Cerda, Jr., age 69, a 50 year resident of Miller Beach, passed away November 10, 2012, surrounded by his family. He served in the Army Special Forces and was a member of American Legion Post 279 and VFW. He was also a member of the Miller Community Association and retired from Arcelor Mittal. He was preceded in death by his father Anthony J. Cerda, Sr., first wife Nita Cerda and step-father Augustin Ceballos. Joseph A. “Chinky” Gonzalez, age 90, of Lowell, formerly of Gary and East Chicago, passed away on Thursday, November 8, 2012.

Joe was a graduate of East Chicago Washington High School and served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He retired from Inland Steel after 40 years of service. Preceded in death by son, Martin, sister, Sally Leyva, 2 brothers, Edward & Howard Munez. Joe is survived by his loving wife of 69 years, Aurora; daughter, Gloria (Pat) Kennedy of Lowell, 2 sons, Steven (Susan) Gonzalez of Orange Park, FL and Geno (Sherry) Gonzalez of Middleberg, FL, many loving grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, & nephews.

Alfrieda S. Lewandowski, age 89, ofPortage, formerly ofCalumet City,IL, passed away Saturday, November 10, 2012.

Alfrieda was a veteran of World War II, Women’s Army Corp. She retired from Hart Marx Corp. She was a parishioner of Our Lady of Knock Church, and a member of the women’s Club of St. Andrew theApostleChurch. She was an avid reader and a volunteer of Meals on Wheels.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank T. Lewandowski and sister Irene Anacziewski. She is survived by her children: Joyce Dennis) Barker, Bob (June) Lewandowski, Patti (Jim) Sucilla and 8 loving grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren.

Thomas Eugene Trial, age 76 of Lake Station, passed away November 4, 2012. He was retired from US Steel 210 Plate Mill after 46 years. He was preceded in death by his parents Armand J. and Viola F. Trial, sister Roberta (Harold) Rosendaul and brother Ronald Trial. Thomas is survived by his wife of 49 years Jeanette (nee Gilbert) Trial; daughter Mellody (Jerry) Humphrey; son Thomas Eugene Trial, Jr.; grandchildren Ashley (Kevin) Ksenak, Sarah, Holly, Margo, Alyssa and Jared; great-granddaughter Cheyenne. Also survived by sisters Shirley (Steve) Larson and Donna Saylor; brother David (Karen) Trial; sister-in-law Laura Trial. Josephine Marie Walsh McConnell of Valparaiso, IN, September 22, 1925 – October 31, 2012

Josephine Marie Walsh McConnell, age 87 of Valparaiso, passed away October 31, 2012. Josephine’s parents Joseph and Maria Walsh were from County Mayo, Ireland. Jo was born in New York, NY and was raised in Gary, IN and graduated from Horace Mann High School in 1943, where she was Secretary of the Senior Class and Secretary of the Student Council that year. Jo graduated from Indiana University in 1948 where she was a member of Alpha Omicron Pi sorority. She worked her way through college which explains the date discrepancy. All of her employment experience was at the Gary Public Library where she began as a page in high school, to School Consultant, and Acting Head of the Extension Department. During 1948-49 she worked on, but didn’t complete, her masters degree in Library Science at the University of Illinois, but got married instead.

Jo’s civic activities included serving on the Board of Directors of the League of Women Voters in Crown Point, IN, Mid-Mesabi, MN and Mount Lebanon, PA, Board of Directors of the American Association of University Women in Virginia, MN and Board of Directors of the South Hills College Club, Pittsburgh, PA.

After her husband Jim retired they traveled for several years and loved seeing Australia, Austria, the British Isles, Denmark, Eastern and Western Canada, Fiji, Hawaii, Ireland, Italy and Sicily, New Zealand, Norway, Paris, southern Germany and Sweden.

Jo was preceded in death by her parents, infant son David, brother John Walsh, sister Hannah Walsh and brother-in-law William McConnell. She is survived by her husband James D. McConnell of Valparaiso; children Mary McKee of Indianapolis, Susan (Jack) Hafeli of Chicago and Matthew (Jennifer) McConnell of Cumming, GA; grandchildren Lucas Ben (Jill) Hafeli, Katie and Michelle McKee, Zoe McConnell and numerous nieces and nephews.

Jo’s friends are invited to meet with her family on Saturday, November 10, 2012 from 10 a.m. until time of Memorial Service at noon at Burns Funeral Home, 701 E. 7^th St., Hobart, IN. Cremation at Burns Funeral Home Crematory will precede the service.
