Melissa Suzanne Mahoney, D.O., age 35, of Portage, passed away suddenly on September 2, 2012.

She was a graduate of Portage High School,class of 1995 and Indiana University NW majoring in biology, and received her D.O. degree at Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine. She was board eligible to the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology. She has been in private practice for 3 years with Methodist Hospital. She was a member of St. Francis Episcopal Church in Chesterton. She was an avid Cubs fan and a passionate animal lover. She loved to read, enjoyed being active and was a huge fan of music, especially the “Wallflowers”.

She was preceded in death by her father, Michael D. Mahoney. She is survived by her mother, Susan Taylor (Mahoney), and sister, Samantha Mahoney, both of Portage and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.

Friends may visit with Melissa’s family at  Burns Funeral Home, 701 E. 7th St., Hobart on Friday, September 7, 2012, from 2:00 to 8:00 p.m. Funeral service will be held at St. Francis Episcopal Church, 237 East, 1200 N, Chesterton, IN on Saturday, September 8, 2012 at 10:00 a.m. Father Thomas Kincaid officiating. Interment at Calumet Park Cemetery.
