Ida Yolanda Ortiz (nee Chabes) age 56 of Portage.
“Yet those who wait for the Lord will gain new strength; They will mount up with wings like eagles. They will run and not get tired, They will walk and not get weary.” – Isaiah 40:31. Surrounded by loved ones, Ida Yolanda Ortiz went home to Jesus on the morning of January 12, 2013 after a three year battle with ovarian cancer. There to greet her in Heaven was her son Pete “Day-Day” Chabes, father Eusevio Chabes, and brothers Guadalupe and Jesse Chabes. She is survived by her husband Federico Ortiz and leaves behind five beloved children: Angelica (Javier) Aguilera, April (Anthony)Santana,Victoria(Jose Luis) Gonzalez, Federico Ortiz, Jr. and Andrew Ortiz along with six grandchildren: Diego and Eusevio Aguilera, Lily-Ida and Jonathan Santana, and Gabriella and Julian Ortiz and mother Lillian Romero Chabes. Ida came from a large and loving family, her brothers and sisters were: Joseph (Carol) Chabes, Frank Chabes, Juanita Chabes, Rudy (Eileen) Chabes, Arthur “Duke” Chabes, Lonnie (Belinda) Chabes, Adeline (James) Vargas, Ricky Chabes and Carmen (Jerry) Regalado. She had many nephews and nieces she loved very much, some of whom she mothered and cared for during various times in their lives. If you needed help, she was the one to turn to.
A devoted Catholic woman, she was a member of St. Francis Xavier Church inLakeStationand worked for 11 years atBroadwayMethodistHospital. Always a beauty, she reigned as the Queen of the Mutualista in 1970. Ida lived life to the fullest. She enjoyed listening to Mexican music, dancing, cooking for loved ones, and the camaraderie of her family and friends. In her final days, Ida said that the greatest accomplishment in her life was her children. Ida will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.
Friends are invited to visit with the family on Monday, January 14, 2013, from 2:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Burns Funeral Home, 701 E. 7th Street,Hobart. Funeral services start at the Burns Funeral Home on Tuesday January 15, 2013 at 9:15 a.m. to St. Francis Xavier Church,2447 Putnam Street,LakeStation, for a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 a.m. Services will end at the church.
