Steven W. Seckendorf, age 59, of Calumet Township, IN, passed away suddenly August 17, 2012.

He is survived by his wife Joann Seckendorf, and daughter Kimberly Sut. He was the devoted son of Margaret (nee Cummings) Seckendorf and the late Fred; beloved brother of Carol (Jack) Fisher, Fred G. (Linda) Seckendorf and Joyce (John) Falstrom. He was the cherished uncle of 6 and proud great-uncle of 6.

Steve was a loving, funny, quick-witted and hard working husband, father, brother and a great friend to everyone he met. He enjoyed life, animals, farming, motorcycles, history, family, friends, and the freedom of the ride. He was an A.B.A.T.E. member, as well as a member of many other non-profit organizations across the world. He was a 20- year plus employee of A.T.& T.

Steven’s smile and friendly jokes will be missed. God bless him and we know he will always be with us.

Friends may visit with the family on Tuesday, August 21, 2012 from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Burns Funeral Home, 10101 Broadway, Crown Point. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, August 22 at 10:00 a.m. at the funeral home. Rev. Mark Wilkins officiating.

John Harvey Padgitt “Jack”, age 75 of Thayer, IN, passed away on Wednesday, August 15, 2012. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force-Korean War. Jack was a loving husband, a great father, and a true friend to many. Jack was a licensed minister for the Pentecostal Church of God and a member of the 1^st Pentecostal Church of God in Hammond. He was a retired machine operator from LaSalle Steel. He loved the Lord with all of his heart, enjoyed spending time with friends at Frankie’s Restaurant, being outside in his garden and rooting for the Cubs. He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister, Roberta Copeland and his brother, Julius “Butch” Lessner, Jr..

Jack is survived by his loving wife of thirty years, Sharon; 4 sons, Danny Padgitt, Johnny Padgitt, Danny Edward (Carmen) Padgitt of Portage, and Edmund Goldbaugh of Thayer; 3 daughters, Christina (Fred) Huntzinger of Ohio, Jackie (John) Padgitt of Griffith and Deborah (Greg) Aguilera of Crown Point; 16 grandchildren; 3 great grandchildren; 2 sisters, Laverne Kraus of Calumet City and Diana Dell of Indianapolis; and 1 brother, .

A Celebration of his life will be held on Tuesday, August 21, 2012 at 10:00 a.m. at Burns Funeral Home, 10101 Broadway, Crown Point, IN. Rev. Leroy Hill officiating. Interment at Historic Maplewood Cemetery in Crown Point, IN. Friends may visit with Jack’s family on Monday from 2:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Burns Funeral Home.

Manuel Riba of Portage, IN, October 22, 1911 – July 15, 2012

Manuel Riba, age 100 of Portage and formerly of Hobart, passed away July 15, 2012. He was a US Army veteran and retired from US Steel with 47 years of service. He was a member of Steelworkers Local 1014, American Legion Post 207, the Hobart Art League, the Lacare Art League and the Spanish Society. Manuel was preceded in death by his wife Isabel in 1992, grandsons Scott and Jason Riba, brother Ralph and sisters Adeline Martinez, , Monse Ruiz and Mercedes Mitchell. He is survived by son Richard (Judy) Riba of Hobart; daughter Linda Adler of Portage; grandchildren Martin Stevens and Stacey (Mike) Scheuer and great-grandchild Nathan Scheuer, all of Portage. A Memorial Service will be Thursday, July 19, 2012, at 6 p.m. at Burns Funeral Home, 701 E. 7^th St., Hobart. Deborah A. Dorsey, age 63, of Dyer, passed away Friday, July 13, 2012. Debbie worked for Lake Central School Corporation for 22 years in food service.

She was preceded in death by her parents Jean and George Soukup; grandson Rowan and great granddaughter Aubree Rose. She is survived by her husband, Tom Dorsey; 2 sons: Tom (Shari) and Chris (Sarah) Dorsey; daughter Tammie (Mike) Olson; 12 grandchildren: Zach, Jacob, Nathan, Lucas, Drew, Emily, Collin, Chloe, Sean, Shane, Sage and Colton. She had one great grandchild on the way. Siblings: Charles Soukup, Pam Haug, Tina Hahn and Vicki Soukup. Also, her precious dog, Oliver.

Raymond G. Hickey, age 82, of LOFS, formerly of South Holland, IL, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, July 11, 2012. Ray was a Veteran of the U. S. Army-Korean War. He was the beloved husband of Mary Ann (nee Van Halter); dear father of Kathleen (Robert) Carlson, Keith (Lori) Hickey, and Kevin (Kelly) Hickey; grandfather of Ryan Szarkowicz, Sean Szarkowicz, Sean Carlson, Kara Hickey, Kalie Hickey, Josh & Jimmy Naccaratto.

Sheldon H. Cohan of Gary, IN, January 10, 1934 – July 10, 2012

Sheldon H. Cohan, age 78 of Gary, died on July 10, 2012, at the VNA Hospice Center in Valparaiso. He was predeceased by his parents Sylvia (nee Rothman) and George Cohan. He is survived by his devoted wife, Caroline; sister Louellyn (Richard) Lower; step-children Lewis (Arrahwanna) Mikos and Tracey (Ricky) Rogers; their children Alexandria and Dustin Miko and Ryan and Sydney Rogers; and his uncle George Rothman.

Sheldon was a lifelong resident of Gary and graduated from Emerson High School. He earned a B.A. degree from the University of Chicago and an LLB degree from Yale University. He served in the U.S. Army and the Reserves and in the U.S. Judge Advocates Corps. Sheldon practiced law in the Gary area for more than fifty years and was know for his dry humor, intelligence and integrity and earned the respect and affection of colleagues, clients and legal adversaries. He loved reading, particularly history, sailing, fishing and the White Sox.

During his life he served numerous organizations on committees and in leadership positions, most notably as President of the Temple Israel congregation, and Master of the Roosevelt Lodge of the Masonic Order, Hobart.

Funeral services will be Friday, July 13, 2012, at 11 a.m. at Burns Funeral Home, 701 E. 7^th St., Hobart. Rabbi Stanley Halpern officiating. American Legion Post 54 will serve as Honor Guard and there will be a committal service by the Roosevelt Masonic Lodge No.716 F.& A.M. Interment at Temple Israel Cemetery, Portage. Friends may visit with the family from 10 a.m. until time of service at Burns Funeral Home (Hobart). In lieu of flowers donations in Sheldon’s memory are requested to Temple Israel, 601 Montgomery St., Gary, IN 46403 or to any Shriners Childrens Hospital of your choice.

Kevin B. Copper, age 61, of Lansing, IL, went to his eternal rest on Monday, July 9, 2012. Kevin was a graduate of Mendota Illinois High School and the University of Illinois, Champaign/Urbana Campus. He was an agent for Farmer’s Insurance and previously he was an operation and marketing executive in the food industry. Kevin was an avid golfer, fisherman, gardener and enjoyed playing with his grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his father, Daniel C. Copper. Kevin is survived by his loving wife of 5 years, Penny; his mother, Dorothy E. Copper of Mendota, IL; four daughters, Elizabeth (Jason) Copper Taylor, of Plainfield, IL, Melinda (Tom) Pfeifer, Brenda (Scott) Hipp both of Winfield, IN, Deidra (Milan) Dezelich of Demotte, IN; two sons, Matthew (Lana) Copper of Colorado Springs, CO and Christopher Copper of Cherry Valley, IL; ten grandchildren, Tristan, Cameron, & Aiden Pfeifer, Cody & Casey Hipp, Milan, Jr., Miranda, & Mirko Dezelich, and Grant Copper; two brothers, Craig (Kathy) Copper of Batavia, IL and Daniel D. Lael Jean Nabhan, of Hobart,
born in Omaha , NE to Eda Augusta and Harry Albein Anderson,
passed away July 3^rd, 2012 at age 91. She was preceded in death by her husband of
70 years, Walter G. Nabhan, parents and siblings Verne (Margie) Anderson and Naioma
(Ted) Sporney. She is survived by her
three children Randy (Linda) Nabhan, Diane Nabhan and Daniel (Roseanne) Nabhan,
10 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews and their
children and grandchildren.

Lael Jean was an active member of Augustana Lutheran
Church. She graduated from Garfield High in Garfield, KS and earned
an Associates Degree from Bethany College in Lindsborg,
KS. She was a wonderful wife and mother,
grandmother, and great-grandmother and a published poet and artist.

Visitation will be Friday, July 6, 2012, from 4 to 8 p.m. at

Sherry was a flight attendant for American Airlines, later becoming a very successful businesswoman. She was a relentless entrepreneur who thought of others much before herself.
