Sheldon H. Cohan, age 78 of Gary, died on July 10, 2012, at the VNA Hospice Center in Valparaiso. He was predeceased by his parents Sylvia (nee Rothman) and George Cohan. He is survived by his devoted wife, Caroline; sister Louellyn (Richard) Lower; step-children Lewis (Arrahwanna) Mikos and Tracey (Ricky) Rogers; their children Alexandria and Dustin Miko and Ryan and Sydney Rogers; and his uncle George Rothman.
Sheldon was a lifelong resident of Gary and graduated from Emerson High School. He earned a B.A. degree from the University of Chicago and an LLB degree from Yale University. He served in the U.S. Army and the Reserves and in the U.S. Judge Advocates Corps. Sheldon practiced law in the Gary area for more than fifty years and was know for his dry humor, intelligence and integrity and earned the respect and affection of colleagues, clients and legal adversaries. He loved reading, particularly history, sailing, fishing and the White Sox.
During his life he served numerous organizations on committees and in leadership positions, most notably as President of the Temple Israel congregation, and Master of the Roosevelt Lodge of the Masonic Order, Hobart.
Funeral services will be Friday, July 13, 2012, at 11 a.m. at Burns Funeral Home, 701 E. 7th St., Hobart. Rabbi Stanley Halpern officiating. American Legion Post 54 will serve as Honor Guard and there will be a committal service by the Roosevelt Masonic Lodge No.716 F.& A.M. Interment at Temple Israel Cemetery, Portage. Friends may visit with the family from 10 a.m. until time of service at Burns Funeral Home (Hobart). In lieu of flowers donations in Sheldon’s memory are requested to Temple Israel, 601 Montgomery St., Gary, IN 46403 or to any Shriners Childrens Hospital of your choice.
