On Monday, September 10, 2012, the Schoonover Family said good-bye to their beloved matriarch, Marjorie Schoonover. Margie, as she was known to family and friends, valiantly fought congestive heart failure to the end. She was surrounded by her immediate family when she passed at the age of 91.
She was preceded in death by her brother, husband, children and grandson (Jack, Carl, Allen, Lynette and Shaun). She is survived by her daughter-in law, Pat Schoonover; grandchildren, Tammy & Bob Misenheimer, Heather & Sam Stokes, Jayme Schoonover and great-grandchildren Tedra, Ariel, Hannah, Aaron & Keira.
Marjorie Mylott was born and raised in Gary, Indiana, and was a graduate of Horace Mann High School where she met and married her husband, Card D. Schoonover also of Gary. They raised their two children Allen and Lynette there as well, relocating to Hebron in 1976.
Marjorie worked for Methodist Hospitals, both Northlake then Southlake campuses, in admitting, outpatient admitting then ER triage, as a full and part-time employee for over 50 years combined. She was a pioneer for working women when working outside the home wasn’t popular.
She was active in Pi Omicron national sorority, which provided fund raising activities for a number of community charities in Gary and Lake County for many years. Marge also served as church secretary for Glen Park Evangelical United Brethren Church for 5 years. Her philanthropy continued throughout her life supporting various organizations such as American Cancer Society, City of Hope and Doctors without Borders. Growing up in the depression with very little was a prime motivation for her charitable efforts to those less fortunate.
Marjorie was widely admired by family, friends and neighbors for her green thumb producing a yard flourishing with beautiful flowers and plants. She tried her hand at various hobbies such as latch-hook, bio-feedback and collecting miniatures as well as being quite the shutterbug. Marjorie enjoyed learning new things as they evolved during her lifetime and simply enjoyed life and her grand-children and great grand-children. She was much loved and will be missed tremendously.
Visitation will be at Burns Funeral Home, 10101 Broadway, Crown Point, IN, on Saturday, September 15, 2012, from 2 to 4 pm. Funeral services will be held on Saturday at 4:00 p.m. www.burnsfuneral.com
