Carmella “Carme” Jancaric, of South Chicago, age 89, passed away on February 4, 2013. Carme was a member of Sacred Heart Croatian Church. In addition to being a devoted housewife, she worked at Gayety Candy Company in Chicago for over 25 years. Carme was an avid Bears and White Sox fan, but most of all, she loved spending time with her family. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her. She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph “Babe” and son Robert (MaryAnn). She is survived by her children, Joseph “Jody” (Nancy) Jancaric; Charlene (Marc) Hanna; Janet (Vince) Emanuele; two devoted nieces, Joanne Gardner and Debbie Hadrych; 9 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. Friends may visit with Carme’s family on Friday, February 8, 2013, from 10 am to 1pm at Burns Funeral Home 10101 Broadway, Crown Point, IN. Funeral services with follow at 1pm at Burns Chapel. Interment at Holy Cross Cemetery in Calumet City, IL.

Harry Berke of Schererville, IN, July 31, 1917 – February 2, 2013

Harry Berke, age 95, of Schererville, passed away Saturday, February 2. Born Hershall Berkovitz, July 31, 1917 in Chicago, IL, of parents, Jacob and Fanny Berkovitz.

He is survived by his daughter Nancy Burge and grandson, Michael Burge of Los Angeles; sister, Elsie Mintz of Munster; sisters-in-law, Eloise (late Armin) Lipsig of Munster and Eve Berke of Hammond and a host of loving nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife of 70 years, Shirley (nee Milgram), daughter, Toni, and brothers Arthur and Seymour; and sister Edith.

Harry graduated from East Chicago Washington High School and attended Indiana University. He and his wife, Shirley, owned the Coronet Shops in downtown Gary and Valparaiso and the Coronet Jr. Bee Hive Stores. Harry later joined the sales force of Largus Printers in Munster where he worked for 15 years.

For more than 60 years Harry performed the Kol Nidre at Temple Israel in Miller. Harry shared his gifted tenor voice with his high school chorus, the male chorus, countless weddings and religious celebrations. Harry headed Temple Israel’s chorus. He also served as President of Temple Israel’s Board of Directors and as Co-Chairman of the Jewish Federation’s annual campaign.

The family would like to give special thanks to Tom Largus and the entire Largus Printing family for the loving care shown Harry during his health struggles; also to caretaker Tammy Berry.

Services will be at Temple Israel, 601 Montgomery Street, Miller, on Tuesday, February 5, 2013 at 1:00 p.m. Rabbi Stanley Halpern officiating.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Temple Israel, Toni Berke Fund or the Continuity Fund or to the Jewish Federation of Northwest Indiana.

Marlene Weiss, age 80, of Crown Point (LOFS), passed away on Thursday, January 31, 2013. She was preceded in death by her son, Garry Weiss and sister, Iris Miller.

She is survived by her husband, Lawrence Weiss; her children, Howard Weiss and Tracy Weiss Salberg; 6 grandchildren, and 1 great-grandson.

Leonard Niepokoj of Crown Point, IN, January 21, 1931 – January 1, 2013

Leonard Niepokoj, age 82, of Crown Point, IN, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Friday, February 1, 2013. Len graduated from Emerson High School and Indiana University, School of Business, Bloomington, IN. He served in the U. S. Army, stationed in Alaska. Len was an entrepreneur in real estate development and mortgage banking. He was President and founder of Suburban Mortgage. Len held leadership positions in many organizations including President of I.U. Alumni Club, during which he helped lay the cornerstone for Tamarack Hall at I. U. Northwest, President of Indiana Mortgage Bankers Association, the Merrillville Rotary Club and the Merrillville Chamber of Commerce during a period of tremendous growth. Len enjoyed playing bridge and was an avid I.U. sports fan and outdoorsman who loved fishing, boating, hunting and gardening. He inspired his family with his will to survive personifying the philosophy of “The Old Man and the Sea”: “A man can be destroyed but not defeated”. Len is survived by his wife, Ruby (nee Kottaridis); daughters: Linda (Thomas) Shaughnessy of River Forest, IL, Carol (Doug) Doorenbos of Readfield, ME, and son, Dean (Ellen) of Crown Point, IN; grandchildren: Kathryn, Caroline, Quinn, Yevy, Leeza and Isabella; sister, Jeanette Kesel of Crown Point, IN; brother, Sigmund of Chesterton, IN; and sister-in-law, Bernice Niepokoj of Chesterton, IN. Len was predeceased in death by parents, Stanley and Sophie (nee Wilusz) Niepokoj; brother, Chester; brother-in-law, Stanley Kesel, sister-in-law, Elaine Niepokoj, and nephew Dan Niepokoj. Friends may visit with the family on Tuesday, February 5, 2013, at Burns Funeral Home, 10101 Broadway, Crown Point, IN, from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, February 6, 2013, at 10:00 a.m. at Burns Funeral Home with Father Ted Poteres officiating. Eugene (Gene) F. Charbonneau, age 85, of Crown Point IN, passed away peacefully on Friday Feb 1 in his home. Gene is survived by his loving wife of 60 years Mary, son Patrick (Rosanna) of South Barrington, IL, Daughters Denise Kochanek (Dr. Patrick) of Pittsburgh, PA, Diane Hoffman (Andrew) of Cincinnati, OH, Rene Martin (James) of Chesterton, IN, and Cynthia Franzmann (Christopher) of Columbus, OH, grandchildren Dr. Ashley Kochanek, Jillian Kochanek, Stanton Kochanek, Jordan Hoffmann, Maximilian Martin, Kaitryn Franzmann and Jonathan Franzmann, sister Betty (Donald) Moore of Red Bluff CA.

Gene was a two tour U.S. Marine, successful insurance broker, past Rotary and Chamber President. Gene was also an avid golfer, who played long enough to experience a hole in one. He and Mary loved their annual summer vacations at a cottage on a lake with their family, a tradition that has continued for 43 years.

Gene loved people and had an outgoing personality and a sense of humor. It was those attributes along with a strong sense of integrity that can be best captured by the motto “Once a Marine, Always a Marine” that left an impression on all those who knew him.

Friends may visit with the family on Sunday February 10^th from 2 to 7 pm at Burns Funeral Home, 10101 Broadway, Crown Point IN. Funeral service to be held at Burns funeral Home at noon Monday February 11.

Janet E. Coslet, age 65, a longtime Hobart resident, passed away January 31,

2013. She was preceded in death by her husband Lyn Coslet and father Charles McCarty. Janet is survived by her mother Letha McCarty; children Jennifer (Dennis Hutnick) Carter, James (Chris) Carter, Jason (Lisa) Carter and Jgeorgia (Don) Glorioso; 8 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild.
