Phyllis J. Broda of Valparaiso, IN & formerly Hobart, IN, May 16, 1937 – January 3, 2013
Phyllis Broda (nee Gibson), age 75 of Valparaiso and formerly of Hobart, passed away January 3, 2013. She was a graduate of Hobart High School, Class of 1956 and served in the US Navy as a Photographer Third class. She worked for the Hobart Township School System for nearly 20 years, and held several other jobs before retiring. Phyllis’ biggest passion was for animals. She loved volunteering at the Animal Shelter and finding happy homes for loving pets. She and her husband loved their small farm where they raised, rode and boarded horses. Phyllis had a kind and loving soul, generous heart and always gave to others. She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 54 years, Frank and daughter Monica Fraher. She is survived by her son Mark Broda and daughter Michele Broda (Greg Bowman) of Hobart; sisters Rosemary Mahsur and Betty Maldonado; 4 grandchildren Sabrina Broda, Kyle (Misty) Fraher of NC, Chad (Casey) Blankman and Brandy Peterson; 4 great-grandchildren and 2 very special nieces Karla (Dennis) Thomason and Stacy (Dave) Garrett.
Funeral Service will be at 6 p.m. Wednesday, January 9, 2013, at Burns Funeral Home, 701 E. 7th St., Hobart, IN. Friends may visit with Phyllis’ family on Wednesday from 2 p.m. to time of service. Pastor Tom Shanahan officiating.

Milan Mitch Uzelac of Merrillville, IN, March 16, 1929 – January 4, 2013
Milan “Mitch” Uzelac, age 83, passed away suddenly on January 4, 2013. Mitch was born in South Chicago, IL to early Serbian settlers the late Jovo and Milka Uzelac, and became a lifelong resident of the Gary, IN area of Lake County. He retired from Ironworkers Local #395, of which he served as a trustee officer of the Local #395. He received his pin after being a 55 year iron worker in the union. He also was a member of the Hobart Fraternal Order of Eagles #2413. For decades, Mitch was a Gold Card member of the Gary Sportsmen Club. In his younger years, many could recall when Mitch assumed a role in the St. Michaels political club on 11th Avenue in Gary, as well the Golden Gloves boxing club in the late 1950s. He was a member of the Iron Workers Birthday Dinner Club and a U.S. Army Veteran. Mr. Uzelac was preceded in death by his parents: Jovo and Milka Uzelac; son, Michael; and brother, Dusan Drakulich. Mitch is survived by his beloved wife of 42 years, Margaret (Margie) Uzelac; son, David M. (Deanna) Uzelac; grandchildren: Jason Littleton, Christine (Bobby) Brazil, Kimberly Uzelac, Lisa Uzelac, David Uzelac, Jr., and Michael Uzelac; five great grandchildren; sisters: Sophie Makivich, Mary Christoff, and Ann Stark; brother in laws: Michael, Edward and Paul Puskar and families; sister in laws: Alberta Bronowski, Angela Caldwell, Rosemary Zemlik and families; and many more nieces, nephews, family members and close family friends. Funeral Services will be held Wednesday, January 9, 2013 at Burns Funeral Home, 10101 Broadway, Crown Point at 10:00 AM with Father Josheph Vamos officiating. Burial will follow. Visitation will be Tuesday from 3:00 PM to 8:00 PM at the funeral home with a Pomen Service at 6:00 PM with Very Rev. Marko Matic officiating.
